If you are like me, you love the rich colours and shine of Black Hills Gold jewelry. I fell in love with it when a cousin came to visit after having taken a vacation in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She had on a gorgeous ring, unlike anything I had ever seen before. I immediately wanted one! After doing some research, I found some interesting things everyone should know about Black Hills Gold rings, and in fact all types of Black Hills Gold.

Missionaries in the Black Hills of Dakota Territory in the mid 1800′s began reporting seeing Indians with gold that they said the found in the Black Hills. Wanting to find out if this was true, government officials sent George Armstrong Custer to the Black Hills on an expedition in 1874, and sure enough, he found gold there. After a decade long gold rush, most of the gold had been mined, and today only one working mine still remains in the Black Hills. It is near Lead, S. Dakota, in the shadow of Terry Peak. Other mines not presently producing any gold ar open, however, for tours and sightseeing.

Gold actually mined in the Black Hills is in short supply now. Consequently, most Black Hills Gold jewelry made today is made with gold that has non been mined in that area. In the 1970′s there were companies that were marketing “fake” Black Hills Gold that was manufactured in other states. So a judge sent down a ruling that for a piece to be considered true Black Hills jewelry , it had to be made in South Dakota, and had to have a tri-color grape motif that was originally designed by early Black Hills Gold manufacturers.

The unique tri-gold coloring of Black Hills jewellery comes from “alloying” or mixing pure 24 Karat gold with differing amounts of copper and silver. The copper gives it the familiar rose or pink color, and the silver creates the greenish colored gold that is used for the leaves in the grape leaf motif. The colored gold is applied to various types of metals, including 10K, 12K and 14K gold and sterling silver to create the unlike styles of Black Hills Gold rings, earrings and necklaces that are available.

If you ar looking for something to put in your jewellery box that is different from the cheap cubic zirconia rings and other pieces you may have, look no further! Black Hills Gold rings are not only beautiful, but they have a rich American history, and they deserve to have a prominent place in any jewellery collection!

This ring is nice but little detail. The leaves of the sides are so small that it is difficult to distinguish the patterns and individual leaves. Due to the size, the colors are not well separated. Nice weight of silver and a perfect fit.
